MISSION: Literacy Volunteer tutors assist adult learners in Basic Literacy or English as a Second Language. Our services help individuals become independent readers, writers, and speakers of English. Educational goals are based on the individual. Whether it’s to get a better job, read to their children, improve reading abilities, or develop conversational English, our student-centered learning approach will help students achieve their goals.

SERVICES: Basic Literacy – This program is for adults 16 years of age and older who desire to increase their reading skills. Literacy Volunteers provides free, one-on-one, confidential tutoring. Students are marched with a trained volunteer tutor. They work together to define the student’s goals and design lesson plans that will help students accomplish their objectives.

English As A Second Language – This program is for adults who are new speakers of English and are interested in improving their conversational speaking and listening stills. Literacy Volunteers provides free, one-on-one tutoring. Students are matched with a trained volunteer tutor. They work together to define the student’s goals and design lesson plans that will help students accomplish their objectives.

SUPPORT: United Way, New York State Education Department, Allyn Foundation, and Individual Contributions.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: Tutors and Office Staff needed.

HOURS: Monday - Friday, 9:30am - 4:00pm (Tutoring sessions arranged by tutor and student).
