Nancy Tehan - Director of Early Childhood Initiatives
Mission: ABC Cayuga promotes healthy development and early learning opportunities of children ages 0-5 by supporting quality interactions with all who are involved with the lives of our children. The vision for the initiative is that all children will reach their developmental milestones.
The community partners, who include service providers, parents, and community leaders meet regularly to support each other’s efforts and to further develop parent and community outreach strategies.
Services: The Play Space located in downtown Auburn will be opening in late 2016. It is a dedicated safe environment that provides resources for early childhood learning and development (ages 0-6 years of age) and allows parents and caregivers the opportunity to meet with other parents and professionals. The mission of the Play Space is to enrich young children’s lives through play by providing a welcoming place where young children and their families play, learn and grow together.
The Play Space will offer dynamic play based educational experiences designed for young children. It is a place for children to examine cause and effect, take risks, ask questions, engage in physical activity and examine their world through exploration and creative expression. Additionally, the Play Space will act as a community center providing families with resources for early childhood learning and development, interactive parenting workshops to strengthen the bond between parents and children, and ideas and tools to enhance learning at home in order to better prepare parents for their role as their child's first and most important teacher. The Play space is built around the five strength based protective factors: knowledge of parenting & child development, nurturing and attachment, parental resilience, social connectedness and concrete support in times of need.
Other services include Community Cafe, Cafe leadership training, Triple P positive parenting and Born Learning Academy.
Volunteer Opportunities: In 2017, volunteers will be needed to work in the Play Space. An application process will begin on-line. Hours: ABC Cayuga Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm. Play space hours to be determined. Access the website or ABC Cayuga Face book page for upcoming changes.
